In November last year, WU LYF‘s (World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) frontman Ellery James Roberts announced unceremoniously that the band was no more. “WU LYF is dead to me. The sincerity of “Go tell fire” was lost in the bull shit of maintaining face in the world we live. Clap your hands chimp everybody’s watching.” And with that, one of the most creative bands to emerge from the Manchester music scene ended after releasing just one album, 2011’s Go Tell Fire To The Mountain.
However, Roberts has returned with a self-released solo effort entitled ‘Kerou’s Lament’. The track without doubt continues his tendency towards the pronunciation of grandiose ideas, ending with the forceful repetition of the lyrics “To the powers of old / to the powers that be / You fucked up this world / but you won’t fuck with me.” The song, whilst being without a doubt a little hyperbolic, is a forceful and sincere expression of anger and turmoil about and to the world. That is something that has to be admired.
